Oscar – The Big Adventure of a Little Sock Monkey

Okay, if you’ve ever been to my site before you’ve probably noticed that I have a little whimsy in my soul. . .  okay a lot.  As my daughters were growing up they had to put up with some different things in our household, like our Christmas tree always had a Sock Monkey sitting high and proud in the branches.  It’s rubbed off on them in some wonderful ways though.  My eldest daughter and I were driving through Garland, Texas several years ago while she was a student at Texas A&M.  It was a really stormy day, complete with all the wind and moisture that comes with storms from the Gulf of Mexico. Anyway, we were cruising along and spotted a sock monkey laying in the middle of a very busy busy road.  We pulled over and picked up this poor rag of a toy. It was evident that this thing was way beyond its prime.  Lots of big holes and very little stuffing.  My daughter’s can-do instincts kicked in and she decided to give this thing a new life.  Several washings later, and lots of old-fashioned sock darning, the little fellow finally got a new set of “innards” and has become a treasured friend of my daughter.  She’s now the mother of two young boys, and I’m sure that this poor little fellow hasn’t seen the end of his tribulations based on what I remember of being a young boy.

But, I digress.  The reason for this page is to highlight a delightful little book that I came across recently, “Oscar  The Big Adventure of a Little Sock Monkey”.  It’s the kind of book that children love to have read to them by a trusted adult.  There’s just enough adventure to raise their pulse, but not so frightening that children will worry about it at bed time.  This one’s a keeper.

I don’t personally know the authors but after reading about them on their web site could well understand why I enjoyed this book so much. (They’ve got talent – a rare commodity anymore.)  Anyway, I give this book a a big thumbs-up and am confident that you’ll feel the same way.  So, if you’ve got little ones about, grab yourself a copy and be prepared to enter one of the best places on earth, your imagination.  Best yet, you get to go with a child.  Life doesn’t get much better than that.

I don’t sell the book, but I am delighted to aim you at the author’s web site where you can purchase your own copy.  It’s worth your time.
